How to mute noisy conversations in Messages on your iPhone

In this post, I will show you how to mute noisy conversations in Messages.

This tip is useful if you want to stop being notified of new messages for a particular conversation (usually, one involving multiple people).

Please note that to take advantage of this feature, your iPhone needs to run at least iOS 8.

The procedure as well as the syntax has evolved over the past iterations of iOS.

Until iOS 10, it was called "Do not disturb" and since iOS 11, it's known as "Hide Alerts".

For iOS 11 and up:

  1. Open the Message app

  2. Select a conversation

    1. iOS 12: Tap on the name then on the small ⓘ

    2. iOS 11: Tap on the small ⓘ (right corner)

  3. Toggle ON "Hide alerts"

A small moon symbol will appear to the left of the conversation telling you it has been muted.

Alternatively, you can also slowly swipe left to reveal a purple button which says either "Hide alerts" or "Show Alerts" depending on whether the conversation is muted or not.

For iOS 8 through 10:

  1. Open the Messages app

  2. Select a conversation

  3. Tap on "Details"

  4. Toggle ON the "Do Not Disturb" button
