2 steps to start organising your photos and videos on your iPhone/iPad

Since iOS 8, it’s easier to organise photos and videos, thanks to the possibility to create both “Folders” and “Albums” in the Photos app:

Folders:

  • can contain albums and other folders

  • cannot contain pictures or videos

  • are recognisable by their 4 thumbnails (2x2 square)

Albums:

  • can only contain pictures or videos
  • cannot contain folders or other albums
  • only show 1 thumbnail (key photo)

To create a Folder at the same level as the built-in albums:

  1. Access the “Albums” view
  2. Long press on the “+” sign in the top left corner
  3. Tap on “New Folder”
  4. Give the new folder a name
  5. Tap on “Save”

To create a folder or album inside an existing folder:

  1. Open the existing folder
  2. Tap on “Edit” (top right corner)
  3. Long press on the “+” sign in the top left corner
  4. Tap on either “New Album” or “New Folder”
  5. Give it a name then tap on “Save”

If you don’t know where to start, I’d recommend to

  1. create a folder for each year (2017, 2016, …)
  2. create dedicated albums inside each of those folders

If you’re using your iPhone professionally, then another approach would be to create two folders:

  • Private
  • Professional

And inside, you’re then free to create albums and/or sub-folders too.
