How to solve the iPhone 6 sudden battery drains issue

Does your iPhone 6 suddenly shut down for no apparent reason?

This issue is coming from a bug that appeared after upgrading to iOS 10.

Both the iPhone 6 and the 6S have been hit but only the latter is subject to the official battery replacement program from Apple.

As a runner, I’ve experienced this problem and the colder outside, the faster the iPhone would shut down unexpectedly, starting at around 50% charge.

Then, to get it back on again, it could take between a few minutes to sometimes 10 minutes (which I suspect is linked to the charge level and the temperature of the battery).

Neither upgrading to 10.1 and 10.2, nor resetting all settings, did solve the problem.

To get rid of the issue:

  1. I made a local backup via iTunes
  2. then wiped the iPhone
  3. and restored it from the iTunes backup

The second step of this process is key, as simply restoring directly from the backup was not enough.

Step 1: Make a local backup via iTunes:

  1. Launch iTunes
  2. Connect your iPhone to your computer via the USB cable
  3. In iTunes, access the Summary page of the iPhone
  4. Tick the option “Encrypt local backup”, then enter a password
  5. Click on “Back Up Now” (and wait for the backup to complete)

Just in case, perform a last iCloud backup too:

  • iOS 10.3 and up
    • Settings > Apple ID > iCloud > Backup> Back Up Now

  • iOS 10.2 and below:
    • Settings > iCloud > Backup > Back Up Now

Step 2: Wipe the iPhone

1. On the iPhone, Deactivate “Find My iPhone”

a. Settings > Apple ID > iCloud > Find My iPhone > Toggle OFF

b. Enter your Apple ID password

c. Tap on “Turn Off”

2. If you have an Apple Watch, unpair it from your iPhone

3. Then, there are 2 options:

  • Either on the iPhone: Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Content and Settings

  • Or in iTunes, on the Summary page, click on “Restore iPhone”

When completed, your iPhone 6 will be like brand new, so the next step consists in restoring your local backup.

Step 3: Restore from local backup

  1. When the iPhone will restart, connect it via USB to iTunes
  2. If you see the “Trust This Computer” dialog box, tap on “Trust”
  3. On the summary page in iTunes, click on “Restore Backup…”
  4. Select the encrypted backup just done prior, then click on “Restore”
  5. Follow the process

Even though all the app data will be restored, you may need to re-authenticate when opening some apps for the first time.

In other words, you will need to enter your username and password to re-establish a connexion with the server for some apps.

Since I’ve done that, the unexpected shutdowns have disappeared, and I no longer worry about using my iPhone 6 when running early in the morning.
